Over the past few quarters, Germán and undergrad research assistants Kathryn and Danae have been growing pickleweed (Sarcocornia pacifica) for an ongoing project focused on studying the relationship between soil salinity and pickleweed anthocyanin content. The team started by collecting pickleweed seeds from North Campus Open Space (NCOS) and transplanted them into pots to be grown in the campus greenhouse. With careful maintenance and monitoring, the team has treated the pickleweed with a low saline solution to emulate the its natural briny environment. As of now, the pickleweed continues to grow in a controlled climate with the expectation that they will be ready for further experimentation in the summer. Stay tuned for more updates!
